Gum infections that damage the gums and can destroy the jaw bone. Untreated gingivitis and periodontitis eventually leads to tooth loss and other health problems.

Common symptoms of gum diseases are swollen, red and tender gums. Sometimes, gums can bleed. Apart from these symptoms, others are bad breath, the bright red color of gums, receding gums, toothache, loose teeth.

There are three main types of gum diseases are gingivitis, periodontitis, and acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis.

Gingivitis is the most common and mildest form of gum disease. There is little or no discomfort at this stage. It is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene.Owing to gingivitis, gums to become red, swollen and bleed easily. Gingivitis is a reversible condition and can treat easily with proper oral hygiene.Other factors which contribute to gingivitis include diabetes, smoking, aging, stress, puberty, pregnancy, drugs, and diseases like HIV and certain medication use.


Untreated gingivitis directly effects on bone and supporting tissues and its called Periodontitis. It characterized by the formation of pocket i.e.damage of soft and supporting tissues around the tooth. Some factors that are responsible for periodontitis are bad breath(halitosis), loose teeth that can make eating difficulty, gum abscesses i.e.collection of pus that develop under the gums or teeth.

Acute Necrotising Ulcerative Gingivitis(ANUG) is a non-contagious infection of the gums with sudden onset. It is also known as trench mouth. Symptoms of ANUG are bleeding and painful gums, painful ulcers, bad breath, a metallic taste in your mouth, excess saliva in your mouth, a high temperature(fever), difficulty in swallowing and talking.

ANUG is more severe than gingivitis and periodontitis. It can be treated by antibiotics, painkillers and maintain proper oral hygiene such as the use of mouthwash and brush regularly.
